Goro Miyazaki being the son of anime legend Hayao Miyazaki, director of such beloved and award-winning anime as Spirited Away and Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind. What has Goro Miyazaki directed? An anime movie called Tales of Earthsea, based on the Ursula K. LeGuin books, a movie which his father referred to as “a giant pile of shit” (I’m paraphrasing, but he didn’t like it). Now Disney finally has the rights to distribute it in America — the Syfy channel had the Earthsea rights locked up for a bit in North America, hence the wait — but they’re just dumping it out with no publicity whatsoever. How little, you ask? So little that apparently this English language trailer has been available on YouTube for over year, and no one noticed until it went on Apple recently. That’s harsh, man. Although watching the trailer, I can kind of see why — it looks boring as hell. Aren’t all the exciting bits supposed to be used in the trailer? If so, there’s maybe 20 seconds of action in this feature-length movie. I know the Earthsea books aren’t exactly Starship Troopers, but man. Thanks to Gleeman for the tip.
