The legendary BBC kids show Blue Peter has had a long history with Doctor Who, featuring behind-the-scenes footage and cast interviews as well as hosting contests in which viewers could participate in the show’s production over the years. A few months ago the latest of these competitions was held in which primary school students across the UK were asked to craft an Olympic-themed episode for a “Script to Screen” challenge. Written by three children from the Ashdene School in Cheshire, England — who were also granted the opportunity to visit the set and meet Matt Smith and Karen Gillan — the resulting mini-episode “Good as Gold” premiered on Blue Peter last night. It is a fun romp starring the Doctor, Amy, a Weeping Angel and an Olympic Torch runner. (Seeing as Rory is nowhere to be found here, it’s probably safe to assume that he’s dead again). Anyway, it’s a nice holdover until Who properly returns in the fall. In a nice bit of synergy/synchronicity, Matt Smith himself will be carrying the Olympic Torch through the streets of Cardiff tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed that this goes better than the last time the Doctor had this responsibility.
