Clive Barker’s Riff on Edward Gorey’s Gashlycrumb Tinies


We all know Edward Gorey was such an influence on Tim Burton that everything from the director’s hair to his stop-motion puppets resemble the whimsical-yet-morbid line drawings of the master illustrator. With Clive Barker, the inspiration might be expected, yet less obvious in execution…until now.

Over on his Facebook page, Barker – in collaboration with artist Paulo Andreas Lorca – is gradually unveiling his own version of The Gashlycrumb Tinies, Gorey’s famous rhyming alphabet book that features a cartoon child’s death for every letter.

A look at A and B are below (they lose their detail in this scale, but the full-sized ones are on FB), and he’s gotten up to the letter I, still going.

And I for one am going to keep tabs to see what’s coming next…
