Technically, most vital organ transplants come from dead people, but the kicker is they’re generally either brain dead, or have died just that moment.

Now hearts can come from people who’ve been dead up to twenty minutes, get restarted with this device, and carried around warm and pumping rather than frozen. You can even see an animated gif of this process in action, but maybe don’t click that link while eating.

The article also notes that it might soon be possible to harvest livers up to an hour after death. So for me and Rob Bricken, there is hope.
