Holy @#$%, Darren Aronofsky Is (Probably) Directing Wolverine 2

I hate posting these things before they’re official — I just get bit in my substantial, pasty-white ass when shit goes wrong — but Deadline says that director Darren Aronofsky is so close to signing the contract to direct Wolverine 2 that it’s a foregone conclusion. All the movie sites are running with it, as they should, but if I didn’t report it I’d look like ass, unless things somehow break down. Sigh.

But the bigger story is that one of the best, most arty, most acclaimed directors of our time is directing a sequel to a shitty comic book movie. Now, don’t get me wrong — I’m glad he’s doing it. And I know he’s pals withe Hugh Jackman after they did The Fountain together. But this is the kind of insane pairing that just shouldn’t happen. Chris Nolan is good, but he was pretty new when Warner Bros. tapped him to make Batman Begins. And that was the first one; it’s not like he was directing the sequel to an incredibly awful movie, like Aronofsky will be doing. WWTDD says it’s like Stanley Kubrick directing Big Momma’s House 3, and I’m hard-pressed to disagree.

I honestly think this is going to be the biggest quality discrepancy between a movie and its sequel ever — at least from bad to good. Can anyone else think of an awesome sequel to a horrible movie? I’m stuck.
